I have long wanted to share my memories of Alonzo.
At the age of 5 and a ministers daughter, I was so excited to have someone come to church that was "my age". Alonzo was sweet, happy and fun. Though we did not have many sundays together, I will never forget his smile.
Sadly I still remember the sadness I felt when I asked my mother why Alonzo was not at church. Her reply, simple, and meant for a child was "Alonzo has gone to live in heaven with Jesus". I did not understand murder at that age, and it also took several years for me to understand why my parents were so protective of myself and my siblings.
My parents and I shared tears again when I was in high school and Arthur Bishop's sentence was carried out. For at that point I had complete understanding of what he did to my friend and why he was given his sentence. With each birthday I have, I think to myself... what great things would Alonzo have done for this world. I am then reminded that he lives through his family and friends. Reminding us to smile and be kind.
Thank you for a friendship I will never forget. Until we meet again.
Sincerely,
Cecilia Bender
